8 miles of secret tunnels beneath campus

Welcome

“Like shadows they scurry through the night, dressed in black, armed with head-mounted flashlights, walkie talkies, cameras and secret maps.” Excerpt from Subterranean City: The UT Steam Tunnels

In 2006 Mark Gutierrez released his documentary Subterranean City: The UT Steam Tunnels.  The documentary was a ethnographic study on the culture and history of the secret underground labyrinth sprawled beneath the campus.  The film was never released commercially but remains the only known comprehensive video study of the entire tunnel system.  In the summer of 2010 Mark Gutierrez will publish his book containing more than 500 photographs and dozens of written accounts of the exploration of the tunnels throughout the last fifty years.

Due to strict regulations and tight security, The University of Texas Steam Tunnels may never be seen again by students or urban explorers.  Though a dangerous and precarious maze the tunnel system may be, it’s rich graffiti and colorful history must not be forgotten.
